This description is machine-translated and has not yet been reviewed.
Built between 1880 and 1884 as shipping between Astrakhan and Baku grew alongside the developing Baku oil industry, the lighthouse was a two-story stone building with a second-order dioptric apparatus, sited on the high ground of Kalagya west of the cape itself. Its light proved too weak, especially in the smoky haze from nearby oil fields, and shipwrecks were frequent enough that local mariners nicknamed the area the "Amburan cemetery"; a prolonged dispute over relocating or upgrading the light was eventually resolved in the station's favor, with a stronger kerosene-incandescent lamp added in 1912 and a fog siren installed soon after. The lighthouse has been under Azerbaijani administration since 1993 and now uses a modern optical apparatus (installed 1983) giving a range up to 21 miles.
