The front light was built in 1897 at the head of the Eastern mole as a 10.7-meter metal tower, following the earlier Penaisky lighthouse of 1876 that marked the bay's outer approach. It became famous for surviving the ferocious local windstorm known as the bora, memorably described by the writer Alexander Kuprin, which in December 1899 encased the tower in a four-meter shell of ice and wrecked much of the harbor and its shipping. Badly damaged when German forces occupied Novorossiysk in World War II, the front light was rebuilt in 1972 as a 21-meter concrete tower with red and white bands showing two green lights, while the rear light, built in 1940 and rebuilt in 1955, is a 14-meter stone tower showing a green occulting light visible up to 16 miles.
