Dzharylgach Lighthouse stands near the eastern end of Dzharylgach Spit, which divides Karkinitska Bay and guards the approach to the port of Skadovsk. Early unlit beacon poles marked the spit from 1826, but the lighthouse itself, an iron braced tower with a central column, was not completed until 1902, first lit on 18 August of that year with a third-order dioptric apparatus and one of the earliest kerosene-incandescent burners on the Black Sea. Its keepers and a naval observation post died defending the station against German troops in November 1941; the lighthouse was rebuilt after the war and resumed operation in 1945. Now under Ukrainian administration, it shows automated white and red flashing lights visible to 15 and 9 miles respectively.
