This description is machine-translated and has not yet been reviewed.
Built in 1877 but not lit until 1882 because of the Russo-Turkish War, the light was a 24.7 m white round stone tower with a third-order dioptric apparatus. In December 1886 the keeper and his staff braved a severe storm and flood to rescue stranded fishermen who had been swept toward the tower in a makeshift fish-salting trough, sheltering the frozen survivors inside the lighthouse. Badly damaged during the German occupation of 1941-43, it was rebuilt in 1957 as a 25 m white hexagonal tower; the site later became part of a nature reserve stocked with pheasants and deer. For decades the Volobuev family has kept the light, which now shows a white flashing light to 15 miles and has been under Ukrainian administration since 1993.
