A capital lighthouse was completed in 1910, a 31.6 m brick truncated-cone tower on an octagonal stone-faced plinth, fitted with a French "Molniya"-type dioptric apparatus won in a 1908 international competition. During the World War II siege of Leningrad it anchored the winter ice road across the Gulf of Finland to Seskar and Lavensaari islands, over which troops, tanks, and supplies were moved in 1942-43, and its garrison repelled a German landing attempt aimed at cutting the route. The brick tower was reinforced with steel bands after the war due to weathering, and in 1998 a GLONASS/GPS differential correction station was installed, extending its role in guiding traffic to the new Batareynaya Bay oil port nearby. It now shows white and red lights to 17 miles.
