The first light here, a wooden crib structure on piles, was built in 1721 by order of Peter I after the English ship London wrecked on the nearby shoal in 1719 (thereafter called the London Shoal); it burned down in 1737 and was replaced for over a century by a series of lightships anchored off the point. Only in the 1950s was the shoal finally marked by a proper shore-based lighthouse, now a red lattice four-sided tower with a white vertical stripe, visible up to 15 miles with a backup light and diesel generators. The site carries heavy memorial significance, with plaques marking the graves of sailors killed in 1919 fighting near the destroyers Gavriil, Konstantin, and Svoboda, victims of the suppression of the 1921 Kronstadt rebellion, and Soviet troops who died there in 1941-1944.
