The cape was charted in 1787 by Jean-François de La Pérouse and known as Cape Suffren until 1973. A lighthouse was first proposed in 1915 but delayed by World War I and the Civil War, finally being built in 1929-1931 as a metal pyramid tower with an automatic acetylene light. A bell and later a siren (1938) served as fog signals, along with a radio beacon installed the same year. In 1960 the station was rebuilt as a 20-meter octagonal stone tower with white and red vertical stripes, which today shows a white occulting light visible up to 16 miles.
