This description is machine-translated and has not yet been reviewed.
Rombak Lighthouse was built in 1903 as a small wooden keeper's house with a lantern tower on its northern end, showing sectored white and red lights to mark a submerged rocky shoal and the island itself. A fire destroyed the keepers' living quarters in the harsh winter of 1920, though the tower itself survived and sheltered the survivors from the cold. The light was converted to acetylene in 1923 to ease the burden of staffing such a barren, waterless island, and it was finally fully automated only in 1994. It now runs on a radioisotope power unit needing no permanent staff, still showing the same white and red sectors and retaining its original early-20th-century appearance.
