A wooden navigational post was erected here in 1858; the lighthouse itself, a red brick building with a metal tower, began operating on 8 August 1900. Poor site survey work meant the tower began sinking within two years, requiring a full rebuild completed in 1913, and it had to be rebuilt again in 1921 after ground-water damage caused the masonry tower to collapse, this time as a taller wooden structure. The station is closely associated with the Khromtsov family of keepers: founder Ivan Khromtsov died in 1913 after catching a chill rescuing shipwrecked sailors, and his wife Kalista Khromtsova succeeded him, becoming the first woman to serve as a lighthouse keeper on the White Sea. It now shows a white flashing light visible up to 16 miles.
