Veshnyak lies in a stretch of water that Pomor sailors called the "ship graveyard" for its sudden weather and strong tidal currents. An unlit wooden daymark was erected here in the late 18th century and rebuilt in 1864 after the loss of the transport Gapsal; leading marks were later added to help ships pass between offshore shoals. A lit acetylene lighthouse was established in 1914, and the tower was rebuilt in 1926. Ships bound for the Arctic and along the Northern Sea Route regularly passed it, including Georgy Sedov's polar expedition ship in 1912. During World War II it operated in a keyed (manipulator) mode to support the Northern Fleet. The current openwork steel octagonal tower, painted with red and white bands, dates from the 1950s and stands 25 m tall; it shows a white flashing light powered by an isotope generator, visible up to 11 miles.
